I Want My Congressperson to Sign the Modi Letter to Biden... NOW!

The letter expresses grave concerns about human rights violations in India under the Modi administration. This is not just about Indian-Americans; it's about standing up for democracy, justice, and the rights of minorities. Prime Minister Modi's actions have led to the suppression of journalists and political opponents, the marginalization of religious minorities, and the rise of extremist ideologies. By signing this letter, we can send a strong message that the U.S. government must actively oppose these encroachments and protect the values we hold dear. Don't let human rights take a backseat. Call your representative now and let your voice be heard for the sake of justice and peace at home and abroad.

If you want to use it as a guide, here’s a script you can use when calling your Representative -

Hello, my name is [ X (although we prefer Amar Akbar or Antonia;)] and I am calling you today for [your Congressperson] to sign a letter to the President of the United States to express concern about human rights violations in India. I would like to speak with your foreign policy staffer to discuss the state of Indian democracy and why the U.S. government must actively oppose the Modi administration’s encroachments on the rights of minorities.

It’s important to sign ths letter because it reflects the concerns of Indian-Americans who have been directly affected and/ or are deeply concerned by the democratic backsliding and human rights abuses by the Modi government [you can include a personal story here, if relevant].

Over the last decade, Prime Minister Modi has jailed hundreds journalists and political opponents, passed laws and policies that relegate Muslims and other religious minorities to second class citizenship, and has failed to act against violent vigilantism and calls for genocide from Hindu supremacists.

On the international stage India continues to maintain a close relationship with Russia and purchase Russian oil, harming U.S. efforts to protect the people of Ukraine.

The Modi administration does not care about human rights and peace at home or abroad, and Congress should not give him a platform to further harm citizens of India, who he values differently based on religion caste and class and as their loved ones in this country — we have to stand up against this"
