India is reeling under the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Vaccines are critical to contain this epidemic. However, Indian companies like the Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech have been unable to ramp up vaccine production to a scale that would allow for the Indian population to be vaccinated in a timely fashion. This is a critical impediment to achieving herd immunity.

The chief impediment to ramping up vaccine production has been access to raw material that is exported by American companies. Under the US Defense Production Act, export of this critical vaccine related material has been restricted for some time.

This is an ardent appeal to the United States Government to lift this embargo as a humanitarian gesture and allow export of vaccine manufacturing equipment and material to India to the extent needed to scale up vaccine production.

Containing the epidemic is not only crucial for India, but the larger world population. An unchecked epidemic in India would mean rise of more mutations of the virus that could in future spread to the entire globe. Whereas aid to India, which is the world's largest vaccine manufacturer will allow for India not only to contain the epidemic within its boundaries, but soon be able to help the rest of the world with vaccine access.
