Shahzia Sikander’s “Witness”: Art for Conversation and Against Intolerance

We are profoundly troubled by the defacement of Shahzia Sikander’s "Witness" sculpture. This act of vandalism is not just an attack on a piece of art but an assault on dialogue, reflection, and cultural appreciation. Art should inspire conversation and contemplation, not acts of intolerance.

"Witness" explores themes of identity, power, and cultural history. By blending traditional South Asian elements with contemporary forms, Sikander addresses gender equality, religious fluidity, and post-colonial narratives. These powerful messages challenge societal norms, which unfortunately has attracted the ire of those resistant to change.

The defacement of "Witness" is a stark manifestation of intolerance. Vandalism of art, especially works challenging societal norms, attempts to silence critical conversations and stifle progress towards a more inclusive society.

We must stand together to defend creative expression. Protecting art means safeguarding the right to free expression, challenging the status quo, and fostering meaningful dialogue. Let us work together to ensure art remains a source of inspiration and reflection, free from threats of destruction.
