Hindus for Human Rights Denounces Pakistan's Expulsion of 1.4 Million Refugees

Urgent Call for the Reversal of Inhumane Decision and Commitment to International Human Rights Standards

Washington, D.C. — Hindus for Human Rights unequivocally condemns the Pakistan government’s decision to deport more than 1.4 million refugees, most of whom fled the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, by October 31, 2023. The Pakistani government's decision to forcibly deport millions of refugees is a violation of international human rights law. This decision could force Afghan refugees, in particular, back to almost certain death. We echo the UN High Commissioner on Refugees and urge the Pakistani government to reverse this decision and provide asylum to those who have fled violence in Afghanistan. Finally, we urge Pakistan to join the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol. This will provide a lasting guarantee to all those who seek refuge in Pakistan that they will be protected from the xenophobic whims of politics.
