A Crisis of Democracy: The Dire State of Indian media ahead of the 2024 elections

A Remarkable Discussion on Indian Media

On October 10, 2023 the Desh Videsh Conversation Series delved into the dynamic, and under threat, world of Indian media, especially in the context of the hotly contested 2024 elections. Originally planned as an in-person event, we were overwhelmed by the response and had to include an online Zoom component to accommodate the audiences who wnated to join from across the globe

Our panel of discussants was xceptional, featuring prominent figures in the field of journalism:

  • Kalpana Sharma, Independent Journalist & Commentator

  • Anuradha Bhasin, Executive Editor of Kashmir Times

  • Raghu Karnad, Co-Founder and Editor of The Wire

This event was made possible by the generous support from UC Berkeley, Hindus for Human Rights, and The Alliance of South Asians Taking Action. The multi-organizational support reflected the paramount importance of the topic at hand.

The conversation itself was more than just an exchange of ideas; it was a deep dive into the challenges confronting Indian media and its pivotal role in shaping the democratic process. What made it even more incredible was the global participation – a diverse community of minds coming together to champion the power of informed dialogue and stand together in our quest for a more vibrant democracy. ✨🤝
