Dalit History Month: Celebrating Resilience and Resistance

Dalit History Month traces its roots back to the United States, where it was first celebrated in April 2014. This month not only celebrates key figures like Ambedkar but also lesser-known Dalit icons and events significant to the community's history.

For example, Uda Devi, a Dalit woman warrior who played a crucial role in the 1857 Freedom Resistance, is among the figures celebrated. Her story, along with others, is remembered for their valor and impact on the fight against both colonial and caste oppression.

While raising awareness about the history, culture, and contributions of Dalits, the month challenges the prevailing narratives that marginalize and erase their experiences. Moreover, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing struggles faced by Dalit communities, such as caste-based discrimination, violence, and socio-economic inequalities so that society can engage in a dialogue that promotes equality, justice, and solidarity.

Since its inception, Dalit History Month has expanded its reach beyond the United States, with various countries joining the commemoration. In India, the birthplace of the Dalit movement, the month of April serves as an occasion for Dalit activism, cultural events, and academic discussions. Similarly, Dalit communities in other countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Nepal, and Australia, have embraced this observance to reclaim their narratives and assert their presence.
