Celebrating Diwali Coast to Coast: Hindus for Human Rights Lights Up Oakland and Maryland

CEDAR LANE UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CONGREGATION AND HINDUS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Hindus for Human Rights joined hands with the Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Congregation for a beautiful interfaith celebration of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas. On a chilly evening, the warmth of community and vibrant performances filled the space. Highlights included a soulful Sikh Kirtan, an enchanting Indian dance performance, an adorable Diwali skit by children, and heartfelt reflections from young members of the diaspora.

Reverend Avi Janamanchi led the gathering in prayers and chants, culminating in a diya lighting ceremony with a unique twist: he invited everyone to light the diyas within themselves, symbolizing the inner spark of compassion and resilience. The evening concluded with a delicious South Asian dinner and laddoos, followed by a joyful moment outdoors with sparklers lighting up the night. It was a memorable evening of unity, culture, and celebration.

HINDUS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS CEELBRATING A PROGRESSIVE DIWALI IN OAKLAND

On November 2nd, Oakland's California Ballroom came alive with the colors, sounds, and spirit of Diwali during the Oakland Diwali Festival, co-hosted by Councilmember Janani Ramachandran and Hindus for Human Rights. This "critical celebration" transformed the traditional Diwali experience into a powerful statement of unity and inclusivity, drawing a diverse crowd from across the Bay Area and beyond.

The festival’s messageemphasized the values of joy, love, and liberation for all people. Through vibrant cultural performances, meaningful speeches, and captivating music by DJ Desiton, the event fostered a sense of solidarity across South Asian communities and with the broader diaspora. Attendees enjoyed food, dance, and storytelling that celebrated Diwali’s rich heritage while also highlighting its relevance to social justice and multiculturalism.

The event was a testament to a mission to promote an inclusive and progressive vision of Hinduism across so many of our community organizations. We all came together to underscore our commitment to uplifting diverse voices, advocating for human rights, and fostering community resilience in the face of challenges.

This year’s Oakland Diwali Festival wasn’t just a celebration of light; it was a celebration of shared values and the power of community-driven change.
