Indians For Palestine: A Call to Action for Peace

A Bit of Background:

On January 26 2024, in response to South Africa’s application against Israel for carrying out genocide in Gaza, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel must “take all measures within its power” to prevent such actions. This ruling is of historic significance because it is the first time that the world’s highest court has held Israel accountable for its violations of international law against Palestinians. This imposes a moral and legal obligation on other country members of ICJ, including India, to cease funding and otherwise, facilitating Israel’s military actions.

Today in Delhi:

Indians for Palestine, a group of concerned citizens made up of political representatives, foreign policy experts, diplomats, and more, held a public meeting at the Constitution Club of India on ‘The International Court and Justice in Gaza’. The aim of this meeting was to reflect on the implications of the groundbreaking ICJ ruling and extend their support to the people of Palestine. During this meeting, Indians for Palestine called on PM Narendra Modi and his administration to take a stand against the human rights violations occurring in Gaza. They urged him to cease India’s defense and surveillance trade relationship with Israel, as well as to stop the recruitment of Indian workers to Israel as a replacement for Palestinian workers whose work permits have been suspended. Indians for Palestine argued that, as a United Nations member, India has a political and moral responsibility to step up in the face of injustice. Furthermore, during a period of democratic instability in India, standing up for the human rights of Palestinians is linked to protecting India’s greater project of secular democracy.

Hindus for Human Rights Statement of Solidarity:

As members of Hindus for Human Rights, we stand in unwavering solidarity with both the people of Palestine and the courageous individuals in India who, despite facing their own government's repression, are speaking out against injustice. Our heartfelt support extends to these brave souls, advocating for peace and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

We recognize the moral imperative to speak against suffering and injustice globally, guided by the principles of Dharma – righteousness and moral duty. In these challenging times, our thoughts are with all those suffering from the consequences of violence and conflict, whether in Palestine or under the oppressive conditions in India.

We believe in the power of compassion, understanding, and dialogue as essential pillars for achieving lasting peace and resolution. Our commitment to human rights knows no borders, and we urge global leaders and communities to come together in pursuit of a peaceful resolution that upholds the safety and dignity of all people.

We call attention to India's role and its troubling complicity in the ongoing crisis, advocating for awareness and action. In the spirit of Ahimsa (non-violence) and the sanctity of all life, core tenets of Hinduism, we strongly advocate for a ceasefire and a path towards a peaceful and just resolution in all regions affected by conflict.

In solidarity and hope, we stand with all who fight against oppression and for the rights of the oppressed, whether in Palestine, India, or beyond.

Sincerely, Hindus for Human Rights
