Reflections from Toronto: Envisioning a Constitutionally True India
On March 21st, 2025, our Executive Director, Sunita Viswanath, traveled to the University of Toronto Mississauga to speak at an inspiring event titled “Envisioning a Constitutionally True India: Upholding Democratic Values and the Role of Diaspora.” Organized by the Centre for South Asian Critical Humanities and Canadians for Indian Democracy, the gathering brought together a cross-border network of thinkers, artists, and advocates committed to justice and democracy in India and beyond.
Sunita joined the event in person, while Harsh Mander and HfHR Advisory Board Membe T.M. Krishna offered powerful reflections virtually. The conversation explored the challenges of authoritarianism and communal violence in India today, and the crucial role that the Indian diaspora must play in defending democratic institutions, standing in solidarity with oppressed communities, and amplifying constitutional values across borders.
We were especially grateful to connect with friends and longtime supporters of HfHR in Toronto during our visit. These moments of community — breaking bread, sharing stories, and strategizing together — reminded us that this work is not only necessary, but deeply rooted in relationships of care and solidarity.
We thank the organizers for creating such a thoughtful and urgent space for reflection and action. The struggle for a constitutionally true India continues — and the diaspora will remain a vital part of that journey.
