Building Communal Harmony: A Visit from Shri Balak Nath Maharaj to Sabka Ghar

At a time when efforts at communal harmony are too often reduced to symbolic gestures or one-time events, our partners at Khudai Khidmatgar remind us that true peacebuilding is a sustained, lived practice. In the reflection below, Faisal Khan shares a moving account of a visit by Shri Balak Nath Maharaj, a Sant of the Nath Sampradaya and Mahant of the Gorakhnath Math in Himachal Pradesh, to Sabka Ghar—a shared space dedicated to unity, dialogue, and fellowship. The encounter—marked by open conversation, mutual respect, and shared tea—challenges the growing climate of fear and division in India. It also affirms the deep power of sitting together, breaking bread, and speaking across difference with honesty and love. In a country being pulled apart by sectarian narratives, this visit is a quiet, powerful act of resistance—and a profound example of what religious leadership rooted in compassion can look like.

For Khudai Khidmatgar, the work of communal harmony is not a program based thing, that can be kept aside or forgotten for long after organizing a seminar .For us It is a continuous process, in which training, dialogue, travel, discussion, etc. keep happening as a continuous process.

On 13th April Shri Balak Nath 108 Sant of the Nath Samprday and Mahant of Gorakhnath Math, Bhuntar, Himachal Pradesh visited Sabka ghar for the same. Our first meeting with the Maharaj Ji took place in a program in Delhi. After that our interaction increased and he expressed the desire to visit Sabka ghar. He would repeatedly insist on the visit however initially we would nod yes just considering it as a formality. This time when Maharaj Ji stayed at the house of one of his devotees in Delhi while returning from Ayodhya after Hanuman Jayanti . He called us over the phone and it was decided upon that he will be visiting us the same day.

Maharaj Ji did open interaction during his few hours stay at Sabka ghar. Our team also did open hearted discussion although I felt that we should keep our interactions light as the guest  came for the first time. However ,Maharaj Ji kept listening and answered with full patience and smile. Initially we refrained from serving any kind of home cooked stuff thinking whether he would accept it or not .However, Maharaj ji said won't you serve tea ? .we informed him that tea will be prepared here in the Sabka ghar kitchen only. Maharaj ji smiled and said where else can it be made. After which we all enjoyed tea twice during the dialogue and integration.

I tried to highlight some important points portraying our ideological standing. I said that such meetings and dialogues are not organized to please anyone or with any other intention but only to clear all the misunderstandings and prejudices. On which Swamiji replied that we consider love, compassion and sympathy to be essential and integral for nationalism. He further said that there is no greater national service in today's times than the work to unite people. So is the religion. The true essence or soul of religion will be destroyed if we remove compassion, love and sympathy from it. What is being done today is a sin which is equivalent to the killing of religion. I urged Maharaj Ji, that he should come forward and take this campaign friendship forward. Maharaj Ji replied and said that "I feel as if this is not the first time I have come here however I felt as if I visited my own people as if I have been living here only. I am overwhelmed by the love and affection I have received. I completely believe that a saint is the one who understands anyone's suffering and is equally compassionate for everyone, there must be no hatred in the name of religion. "He committed his full support in our work, invited us to his ashram and so on.

Maharaj ji returned to his ashram after the formal welcome .We did not even realize when 3 hours passed discussing friendship, love and harmony .Initially I was a little hesitant with some predictions especially about food, drinks and conversation but all of them were shattered. Some friends might presume that only good things must have been discussed. contrarily there was open discussions around various issues , several questions and answers .however everything cannot be written down in one writeup.

These days conversations, meetings ,sitting together, eating together etc. have become scarce  and hence has become need of the time. People of two religions should sit together and interact with each other, introspect and thereafter move on to the path of humanity, goodwill, brotherhood, unity, compassion, love, dedication and sacrifice.

ख़ुदाई खिदमतगार के लिए  साम्प्रदायिक सद्भभावना का काम कोई कार्यक्रम आधारित चीज़ नहीं है,कि एक सेमिनार कर लिया और बहुत दिन तक भूल गए । यह एक सतत प्रक्रिया है,जिसमे लगातार इसके लिए हमारे यहां प्रशिक्षण ,संवाद ,यात्रा ,चर्चा ,वगैरह चलते ही रहते हैं।

इस सिलसिले में अप्रैल को नाथ सम्प्रदाय के संत श्री बालक नाथ १०८  महंत गोरखनाथ मठ,भुंतर हिमांचल प्रदेश पधारे  ।  महराज जी से पहली मुलाकत दिल्ली में एक कार्यक्रम में हुई थी। उसके बाद से सम्पर्क बढ़ता गया और उन्होंने सबका घर आने की इच्छा व्यक्त करी । वह बार बार कहते कि आप तो बुलाते ही नहीं है । मैं उसको औपचारकिता ही समझ के कह देता जी ज़रूर आइये । इस बार महराज जी हनुमान जयंती के लिए जब अयोध्या से वापसी पर दिल्ली अपने एक भक्त के यहां रुके । तो फ़ोन पर ही बात हुई और तय हुआ के आज ही शाम में आयंगे और मिलेंगे ।

कई घण्टों के प्रवास में महराज जी ने खूब खुलकर साथियों से चर्चा करी ।  साथियों ने भी खूब खुलकर बातें की,बातों में कई बार तो मुझे लगा की पहली बार आये मेहमान से थोड़ी हल्की फुल्की बातें होनी चाहिए ।  लेकिन महराज जी पूरे धैर्य और मुस्कुराहट के साथ सुनते रहे और जवाब भी देते रहे । हमने कोई भोजन वगैरह या घर की बनी चीज़ नहीं रखी थी कि शायद वो पकी हुई कोई चीज़ न लें । लेकिन महराज जी ने आने के थोड़ी देर में कहा की चाय नहीं पिलायेंगे । तो हमने कहा महराजचाय तो यहीं किचन में बन पाएगी ।  महराज जी ने मुस्कुराकर कहा भला और कहाँ बनेगी ।  उसके बाद करीब दो बार चाय पी गई। मैंने कुछ मोटी मोटी बातें, जो हमारे वैचारिक स्थति को स्पष्ट करते हैं।  बताते हुए कहा की इस तरह की मुलाकाते , संवाद किसी को खुश करने या किसी और नियत से नहीं सिर्फ इसलिए आयोजित करते हैं कि डायलॉग,तमाम गलतफहमी को दूर करते है । उन्होंने कहा की हम  राष्ट्रवाद में प्रेम ,करुणा ,दर्दमंदी को ज़रूरी मानते हैं । आगे कहा की जो लोग लोगों जोड़ने ,मिलाने का काम कर रहे हैं, इस से बड़ी राष्ट्र सेवा आजके दौर में कुछ भी नहीं है । यही हाल धर्म का है अगर उसमे से दर्दमंदी ,करुणा ,प्रेम निकाल दिया जाये तो धर्म की आत्मा नष्ट हो जायगी जो आज किया जा रहे है ये धर्म की हत्या के बराबर पाप है। मैंने कहा की महराज जी इस वक़्त आप को आगे आकर इस दोस्ती के अभियान के आगे बढ़ाना चाहिये । यही सबसे बड़ा राष्ट्र प्रेम है,महराज जी ने इसके उत्तर में कहा की मुझे ऐसा लग रहा है । जैसे मैं आप लोगो के बीच पहली बार नहीं आया,यहीं रहता हूँ । जो अपनापन और प्रेम मिला है उस से मैं अभीभूत हूँ । मैं बिलकुल मानता हूँ की संत वह ही है, जो सबको साथ लेकर चले। जिसको किसी की भी तकलीफ से तकलीफ हो, धर्म के नाम पर नफ़रत बिलकुल भी नहीं होना चाहिये । आप जहां बुलाओगे मैं हाज़िर रहूंगा। आप सब मेरे मठ आइये वैगरह वैगरह ।  उसको बाद औपचारिक स्वागत के बाद करीब चार घंटे बाद महराज जी वापिस हुए  । दोस्ती ,प्रेम,सद्भाव ,में 3 घंटे कब निकल गए पता ही नहीं चला । मेरे मन में भी बहुत संदेह थी खासकर ,खाने पीने ,बातचीत को लेकर वो सभी दूर ही नहीं चकनाचूर हो गए  । कुछ क्रन्तिकारी साथियों को लगेगा सिर्फ अच्छी अच्छी बातें की होंगी । ऐसा नहीं बातें तो खूब दिल खोलकर हुई ल,खूब सवाल जवाब हुए लेकिन सब लिख दी जाएँ ऐसा ज़रूरी नहीं  ।

यह बातचीत,मिलना जुलना,साथ उठना बैठना,खाना पीना ही तो आज दुरूह है । यही इस वक़्त की ज़रूरत है । दो धर्मो के लोग साथ बैठकर एक दूसरे में झांके,फिर खुद में झांके और उसके बाद मानवता,सद्भावना,बंधुत्व,एकता,संवेदना,प्रेम,समर्पण,त्याग के रास्ते पर चल निकलें । यही वक़्त की ज़रूरत है ।
