Seattle City Caste Discrimination Ordinance - A Win for Human Rights

Hindus for Human Rights would like to extend our heart-felt happiness to all caste-oppressed people throughout the world for their historic victory in Seattle City, which became the first city in the U.S. to ban caste discrimination.

This is a victory for all involved in the battle to eliminate caste and other forms of bigotry from our world. We’d also like to thank Councilmember Kshama Sawant for including HfHR Board Member Sravya Tadepalli’s remarks in her victory speech.

Our work has only just begun in Seattle, where the new law needs to be firmly tested in the courts, without which tech giants in the area are unlikely to start acting on the new law to add caste discrimination as a category of potential discrimination in their H.R. policies. HfHR offers our unstinting support in these coming battles.

As a Hindu American organization whose members and leadership come from diverse caste backgrounds, we bear the responsibility to continue to educate the Hindu American community about the horrors of caste discrimination. We are counting on all of your moral support to us in this challenging task ahead.

On April 15th, the day after Dr. Ambedkar’s birthday, our “Desh-Videsh Conversation series” will focus on caste discrimination and the reservation policy in India. We have a stellar panel joining us and we hope you can attend: https://tinyurl.com/deshvideshcd
