Yesterday, in a powerful show of unity, diverse voices gathered in New York City to stand in solidarity with the people of Al-Makhrour, Palestine, during an interfaith vigil. The event, centered on the ongoing Israeli colonial-settler policies threatening the last unspoiled green space in Bethlehem, was a profound reminder of the shared struggle for justice, peace, and freedom. Al-Makhrour, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is currently at risk of annexation, a struggle that mirrors the broader threats to Palestinian identity, land, and heritage.

Vigil participants shared prayers, reflections, and a collective call for justice. Among those speaking was our Executive Director, Sunita Viswanath, who highlighted the urgent need to protect not only Al-Makhrour but the Christian and Palestinian presence in the West Bank.

Speakers from Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faith traditions called for solidarity, unity, and unwavering resistance to oppression. The vigil brought together the profound wisdom of ancient texts with the pressing realities of today’s political challenges, reminding us of the deep connection between faith, land, and justice.

The event's lineup included moving contributions from the Kisiya family, whose land in Al-Makhrour is at the heart of the struggle, urging all attendees to support their efforts to return home. As the vigil came to a close, we were reminded through prayer and song that the fight for justice is a global one—rooted in love, resistance, and hope.

Together, we vowed to continue the fight for the land and its people, the preservation of Al-Makhrour and prayed for peace and justice. The vigil was not just a call to protect a piece of land, but a call to protect the dignity and rights of all those who suffer under occupation.
