Hindus for Human Rights wishes to do everything in its power to help mitigate the disastrous effects of the Corona Virus in India. To this end, we are compiling a directory of organizations and efforts we know personally, and can vouch for, which are currently doing incredible relief work on the ground. Tamil Nadu

india nirman sangh: kodaikanal, tamil nadu

Since 2005, India Nirman Sangh has worked towards women’s development in the villages and hills in and around the Kodaikanal and Palani towns of Tamil Nadu. Currently, India Nirman Sangh has been distributing basic grocery packs to 2000 women and their families, as well as running a tailoring Centre that is producing masks that are being distributed along with the grocery packs. INS is also providing basic income support to those in utmost need.

Bhoomika: Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Bhoomika Trust is a non-profit operating in Chennai in the hopes of assisting and empowering the most vulnerable in society. The trust runs a number of ongoing projects as the need arises—particularly in the areas of disaster relief, rehabilitation, and mitigation, as well as education. Just as Bhoomika sprung into action during and following the Kerala and Chennai floods, it is doing everything it can during the COVID-19 pandemic. Right now, Bhoomika is working on providing cooked meals, rations, and medical supplies such as masks and sanitation kits. You can contribute directly to their efforts here.

UMEED PROJECT

'Umeed Project' is run by a Delhi based registered NGO, Project Umeed Welfare Foundation which has worked on the ground in Delhi since the first wave of Covid hit Delhi in early 2020. To date, Umeed Project has provided continuous food and Covid-19 essential relief to more than 8,00,000 people across 43 locations in Delhi, UP, Rajasthan and NCT with 4,50,000 cooked meals and dry ration & essentials kit to more than 43,000 families.

In this covid crisis of March-April 2021, Umeed Project has been addressing the severe shortage of ventilators.

Delhi has almost 10 lakh or 1 million Covid+ cases, but only 1168 ventilators
There is only 1 Ventilator for 900 Covid+ people in New Delhi. 

Umeed Project pledges to supply ventilators to the hospitals every hour until they reach their target of 350.
They have identified vendors of ventilators and government hospitals waiting for them.

As our country along with the world, last year, faced an unprecedented situation of lockdown due to COVID - 19 pandemic, PAIGAM, in collaboration with groups and individuals came out in support of daily wage workers, small business owners, street hawkers and migrant labourers by providing immediate minimum income support along with food supply for their survival.

A year later our country fights an even deadlier second wave of the virus and marginalized communities are once again left exposed. PAIGAM stands in solidarity with all those who are affected and is focussed on reaching out to the vulnerable communities by providing-

The Socialist Party (India) has been engaged in COVID relief efforts since late March, distributing dry ration kits and masks, as well as providing support during medical emergencies, to over 30,000 community members. SPI’s donors have generously contributed over INR 25 lakh to support SPI’s 23 Community Kitchens (100,000 meals distributed) and Micro-Credit Program, through which SPI provides small loans of Rs. 5000 to community members to help them restart businesses after the nationwide lockdown. Thus far, loans worth over INR 3 lakh have been provided to 64 people in Lucknow.

humsafar: a support centre for women in crisis Lucknow, Uttar pradesh

HUMSAFAR is a support center for women in crisis based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. HUMSAFAR works on gender-based violence—and given the magnitude of the current crisis, it has reached out to support those with whom it works closely and are suffering the hardship of the pandemic. It is supporting single mothers, women e-rickshaw drivers trained by HUMSAFAR, and women from the communities and workers who are facing hunger due to lockdown. HUMSAFAR is also part of a relief group formed in Lucknow by many other NGOs and concerned individuals who are reaching out with dry ration to workers and migrants. HUMSAFAR is also working as part of a national helpline to address issues of increased domestic abuse and mental health due to pandemic. HUMSAFAR is registered to receive foreign donations. VISHWA JYOTI JANSANCHAR SAMITI, VARANASI, Uttar pradesh

Vishwa Jyoti Jansanchar Samiti/Vishwa Jyoti Communications is a centre for media, art and culture which is committed to promotion of human rights, primary education, communal harmony, community building, and development through low-cost media.

Currently VJC is involved in networking and coordinating with genuine grass root social organizations, doing relief works and health support to the victims of CoVID-19. They have taken up the following works:

1. Designing, printing and distribution of a pamphlet containing home remedies, allopathic and homeo medicines, methods of oxygen boosting, CoVID-19 protocols, helpline numbers etc.

2. Distribution of masks, sanitizers, eucalyptus oil for inhalation etc.

3. Providing nebulizers, oximeters etc. for those in need for a few days

4. Sanitizing homes of people who have turned negative/healed after being positive

5. Providing free transport for those in need

6. Establishing 12 temporary health centres for people who have symptoms of CoVID. These First Level Treatment Centres will start functioning latest by 17 May.

7. Planning for supply of food provision (dry ration) to families of people who are affected by illness and to those who have lost their jobs, namely daily labourers.

Once a beneficiary requests a ration kit, the FreeRation.in team verifies the recipient, connects them with a merchant, and delivers a ration kit (one week's worth; 600 INR) to their doorstep.
